There are a few things that unite the people of almost every country; sports undoubtedly occupies a high ranking on that list. For Malaysians, there is nothing quite like gathering at a mamak stall, devouring a delicious platter of food while watching a game of football or badminton on the projected screen.

Nearing the end of October, the annual Malaysian Games (MGames) found its way back to Manchester, filling up Sugden and Denmark Road Sports Centre with sportsmanship, food from home, and audible instances of ‘lah’. Hosted by several universities in a rotative manner through the academic year, MGames is a staple on every student’s bucket list. This one-day event is when Malaysian athletes and students from all over the UK and Ireland gather in the vibrant Manchester to compete in sports events.

This year’s MGames saw the fierce competition of ultimate frisbee, football, netball, volleyball, badminton, and basketball. No individual or team held back their skills and trainings, unleashing their very best performance on the court in the name of sportmanship, and, of course, in an attempt to bring home a medal or two.

Participants were also blessed with Malaysian food prepared by our vendors, with options such as nasi kerabu, karipap, maggi goreng mamak, and so much more! As spectators wandered from hall to hall, cheering on their friends and making new ones, the clock ticked by. Eventually, all good things come to an end. But not to worry: there is always the next MGames marked on the calendar.
