As the leaves turn auburn and canary following the swift arrival of September, one by one, planes arrive at Manchester Airport, and Malaysian freshers set foot upon Mancunian ground for the first time. Settling into university and a new country is not an easy feat, and MSSM was there to make sure that students could navigate the new land and friendships easily.
This year’s Ohana Ber-bonding, hosted in collaboration with our affiliate MALECS, saw the participation of over a hundred Malaysian students in Manchester, a mix of both seniors and freshers. Gathered under the Saturday sun in Brunswick Park, freshers were swiftly divided into their Ohana families, all of which consisted of two senior students as ‘Ohana parents’.
Ohana Ber-bonding was structured as an exciting tour of Manchester in the form of a scavenger hunt. Teams were given a list of clues and had to figure out which locations the clues were pointing toward. The task at hand was to take creative photos at as many locations as each team could decipher. Soon, teams dispersed all around Manchester trying to win the hunt and bring home a basket of prizes. Many landmarks around Manchester were hidden within the clues, as well as famous buildings on campus.
At the end of the day, it is safe to say that freshers became that much more familiar with the city and made new friends as well. There is nothing much like kicking off a new semester surrounded by people from home.
